Albert James was always on the move. As a soloist and stage manager with the D’Oyly Carte touring company he took prominent roles on stage and behind the scenes both nationally and internationally, and as an advance publicity manager for provincial tours it was his job to stoke excitement in towns and cities across Britain before the shows rolled in. Yet this very mobility is one of the things that makes him hard to pin down. In this Sunday Feature, first broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in October 2018, and available to listen to in full here, Nell caught up with him in archives and special collections, and discussed the ambition and achievements of his remarkable parti-coloured career on the road and on the stage. And you can catch a glimpse or two of Albert himself here, in the Gallery which accompanied the programme.
