Nell took to the airwaves again in the winter to contribute to a fascinating series for BBC Radio 4, Britain in Ten Operas, presented by the celebrated baritone Roderick Williams. In the second episode, ‘Courtesans and Captains’, which you can listen to here, she discussed the traditional associations between Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic operas and the expression of a certain kind of British identity at the end of the nineteenth century – and suggested that perhaps those associations haven’t told the full story. You can listen to all three episodes of the series here.
